SOUTH EASTON, Mass., May 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (PBIO) (“PBI” or the “Company”) today announced the publication in the journal Analytical Chemistry of a study by a team of scientists led by Dr. Bruce Kristal, Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, entitled: Method Development for Fecal Lipidomics Profiling. The long-term goal of the study was to gain a greater understanding of the gastrointestinal (“GI”) system, i.e., the gut, and its role in health and disease in certain high-risk patient populations (such as premature infants) by analyzing the full lipid profile in fecal material. Lipids are a group of naturally occurring molecules, including fats and cholesterol, which have been associated with a number of diseases and disorders, such as heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

The importance of understanding and evaluating the GI system is evident with recent scientific advances in diseases such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic diarrhea, and in disorders such as autism, allergy, and obesity. It is believed that new and improved laboratory tools that enable a better understanding of gut function could have a significant impact on diagnosing, treating, curing, and preventing such diseases and disorders. Furthermore, the ability to better evaluate GI function, especially through simple and non-invasive means, could have a significant impact on decreasing the cost and increasing the quality of healthcare worldwide.

In their publication, Dr. Kristal and colleagues reported that the combination of PBI’s patented pressure cycling technology (“PCT”) platform and certain chemicals improved the extraction of lipids from fecal material. They concluded that their new method “opens the door to the use of fecal lipid profiling for both scientific and clinical applications” and that it “provides a reproducible, generally applicable, broad-based, and non-invasive technique for establishing gut function in patients regardless of age or disease.”

Further, the authors stated that the study “represents a new paradigm for determining the impact of initial intestinal colonization and for assessing nutritional, infectious, and inflammatory status” in premature infants. They proposed that the method might be useful in other strategies for monitoring the GI system and might help improve care for vulnerable patients with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, and gastrointestinal cancers.

Dr. Nate Lawrence, VP of Marketing and Sales for PBI, said, “We believe this novel method can help determine and assess intestinal function, response to nutrition, inflammation, and even the occurrence and/or progression of disease. We further believe that it could have both diagnostic and prognostic implications on vulnerable and difficult-to-study populations, such as premature infants and the elderly. We are thrilled that our PCT platform is an important part of this exciting, potentially paradigm-changing method, one which we believe could play a significant role in future research and clinical applications.”

The authors stated that to their knowledge this publication was the first report of full intact lipid extraction from fecal material followed by LC-MS analysis. The analysis of intact lipids is important as it results in better biological information compared to non-intact lipids. LC-MS is a popular method widely-used by research scientists worldwide in the study of proteins and lipids.

About Pressure BioSciences, Inc.

Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (“PBI”) (PBIO) is focused on the development, marketing, and sale of proprietary laboratory instrumentation and associated consumables based on our proprietary technology – pressure cycling technology. PCT is a patented, enabling technology platform with multiple applications in the estimated $6 billion life sciences sample preparation market. PCT uses cycles of hydrostatic pressure between ambient and ultra-high levels to control bio-molecular interactions. PBI currently focuses its efforts on the development and sale of PCT-enhanced sample preparation systems (instruments and consumables) for mass spectrometry, biomarker discovery, bio-therapeutics characterization, vaccine development, soil and plant biology, forensics, histology, and counter-bioterrorism applications.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Amarantus BioScience Holdings, Inc. (AMBS), a biotechnology company discovering and developing treatments and diagnostics for diseases associated with neurodegeneration and apoptosis, today announced a development timeline for its LymPro Blood Test for Alzheimer’s disease (“LymPro”). LymPro is designed to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease by identifying immune-based biomarkers in the blood of Alzheimer’s patients, allowing physicians to definitively differentiate Alzheimer’s disease from other forms of dementia, a key unmet medical need in the management of Alzheimer’s patients. Human clinical studies for LymPro with over 160 patients have been completed to date, showing high sensitivity and specificity for Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.

“The LymPro assay represents a blood-based peripheral means to assess the integrity of the regulatory function of the cellular machinery within the Central Nervous System,” said Amarantus corporate advisor Adam J. Simon, Ph.D. “Although we all experience various triggers and assaults on our brain as we age, why do some people succumb to Alzheimer’s while others show cognitive resilience? The LymPro test can potentially tell us who is susceptible to abnormal cell-cycle re-entry and who has sufficiently strong regulatory function in their neurons to arrest cell-cycle re-entry due to triggers such as age, diet, viral infection, stress, or brain injury that could eventually lead to Alzheimer’s disease.”

After establishing the analytical performance of the assay in an outsourced GLP laboratory, Amarantus plans to conduct a small clinical performance study at an independent laboratory in the second quarter of 2013 to verify the previously published findings. During the third quarter of 2013, the Company expects to initiate a pivotal diagnostic accuracy study (Phase 2) at the same independent laboratory to generate sufficient data to validate the clinical performance (sensitivity / specificity) that would support a CLIA launch, with data available in the first half of 2014. As part of that pivotal study, LymPro will be evaluated as an “aid to the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.” The Company intends to initiate commercial worldwide sales following assessment of the validation study data. Thereafter, the Company intends to gain U.S. clearance or approval for the test through the Food and Drug Administration’s de-novo Pre-market notification 510(k) or Premarket Approval (PMA) process, which would represent a 3-month to 2-year process. Ultimately, the Company believes LymPro could be approved by the FDA as a companion diagnostic product in combination with one or more therapeutic products.

“We are excited with the progress and upcoming activities related to our LymPro Alzheimer’s test, which addresses a market opportunity in excess of $500 million annually,” said Gerald E. Commissiong, President and Chief Executive Officer of Amarantus. “The FDA has stated the importance of identifying Alzheimer’s at the earliest stage, as that is where new treatments appear to have the greatest benefit to patients. We believe LymPro fits well within this overall strategy and will likely have the dual benefit of improving overall diagnosis paradigms and accuracy, while also potentially reducing overall healthcare costs if combined with an appropriate therapeutic product as a companion diagnostic.”

The field of diagnostics for Alzheimer’s disease has been significantly bolstered in recent months with FDA guidance for drug developers to target experimental therapies of Alzheimer’s disease towards earlier-stage patients, as well as guidance reducing the burden of proof for drug developers to gain an approval. In 2010 Eli Lilly & Co. acquired Alzheimer’s diagnostic developer Avid Radiopharmaceuticals for $800 million, including $300 million up-front, following Avid’s application for marketing approval to the FDA for florbetapir, a chemical agent used in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease during a PET imaging process. Amarantus believes that LymPro may have certain advantages over florbetapir, including the likely cost-effectiveness of LymPro as a simple blood test in comparison to more expensive neuro imaging techniques.

Pressure BioSciences (PBIO), High Growth Expected for 2013 and Beyond

By Grant Zeng, CFA
Another Strong Quarter of Product Sales is Expected

After booking record sales of PCT products in third quarter of 2012, we are expecting another strong quarter of product sales for fourth quarter of 2012.

We estimate product sales of $0.32 million for the fourth quarter of 2012, a 79% increase compared to $0.18 million product sales of 4Q11. These product sales include PCT equipment and consumables.

Grant revenue is expected to be $0.10 million for 4Q12, compared to $0.16 million for 4Q11.

Total revenue based on our estimate will be $0.42 million for the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to $0.34 million for the fourth quarter of 2011, an increase of 25%.

Gross margin for product sales is estimated to be 65.6% for the 4Q12, compared to 48.5% for the 4Q11, a 35% improvement.

Operating loss is expected to be $0.7 million for the 4Q12, compared to operating loss of $0.9 million for 4Q11, a 22% improvement.

We estimate that net loss will be $0.9 million or $0.08 per share, compared to net loss of $2.0 million or $0.30 per share.

Based on the improvements of financial results for the last three quarters of 2012, and the aggressive commercialization strategy the Company has implemented in 2012, we expect revenue will enter into high growth in 2013 and beyond. From 2012 to 2015, net product sales will grow at amazing 118% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). PBIO will become profitable in fiscal 2015 with EPS of $0.06 based on total revenue of $11 million.

We think the share price of PBIO is undervalued. At this time, the downside risk is low while upside potential is high for the Company.

Leadership Strengthened by Appointing New Chief Financial Officer

On December 5, 2012, Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (OTC Markets:PBIO) announced that Mr. Conrad F. Mir has joined the Company as its chief financial officer, effective immediately.

Mr. Mir has over twenty years experience in investment banking, financial structuring, and corporate reengineering. He has served in various executive management roles and on the Board of Directors of several companies in the biotechnology industry. Most recently, Mr. Mir was chairman and CEO of Genetic Immunity, Inc. (:GI), a plasmid, DNA company in the HIV space. Prior to GI, Mr. Mir served as executive director of Advaxis, Inc., a vaccine company. During his tenure at GI and Advaxis, Mr. Mir was responsible for raising nearly $40 million in growth capital and broadening corporate reach to new investors and current shareholders.

Prior to GI and Advaxis, Mr. Mir worked for several investment banks including Sanford C. Bernstein, First Liberty Investment Group, and Nomura Securities International. He holds a BA/BS in Economics and English with special concentrations in Mathematics and Physics from New York University.

PBIO recently announced record PCT product sales for the third quarter of 2012, and we expect another strong quarter of product sales for the 4Q12. The Company has implemented aggressive commercialization strategy in 2012 to accelerate the revenue growth of its patented PCT products and services which included, among other things, an increase in international sales and distribution coverage from three to over twenty countries. But PBIO needs to properly finance this initiative. This is currently the biggest concern.

We believe the strong investment banking background of Mr. Mir will help PBIO raise new capital to fund its operations. It is also one of Conrad’s best strengths. He has proven over the past few years that he has the ability to raise significant funds for small, developing companies in a smart and timely way.

SOUTH EASTON, Mass., Feb. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (PBIO) (“PBI” or the “Company”) today announced that Dr. Mickey Urdea has been appointed to its Board of Directors, effective Friday, February 8, 2013. Dr. Urdea will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Wayne Fritzsche, a longtime Board member who resigned on Thursday, February 7, 2013 to pursue a full-time, management position with PBI. Dr. Urdea will be a Class III Board member – his term of office will expire at the 2014 annual meeting of shareholders. In addition to his Board of Director’s responsibilities, Dr. Urdea will develop and lead the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board.

Mr. Jeffrey N. Peterson, Chairman of the PBI Board of Directors, said: “Mickey’s technical experience, gained from bench scientist to widely-recognized R&D leader spanning multiple successful cutting-edge technologies, will contribute strongly to the selection and development of key markets for our patented pressure cycling technology (“PCT”) platform. His entrepreneurial success in founding and leading nationally-acclaimed companies in biomarker discovery, personalized medicine, and healthcare strategic consulting will be immensely useful as we continue our aggressive PCT commercialization strategy. We are honored and privileged to welcome Mickey to the PBI Board.”

Dr. Mickey Urdea commented: “Since being introduced to PCT just three months ago, I have become fascinated with the current applications and extensive future potential uses of this cutting-edge technology platform. Over the years, I have helped develop and then support the marketing of many new technologies, several of which made significant impacts in the research and diagnostic marketplaces. To that end, I believe PCT has the potential to gain widespread adoption and become a vital sample preparation tool to research and clinical laboratories worldwide. I am very pleased to join the PBI Board, and look forward to helping Ric, his impressive team, and my new colleagues on the Board of Directors make as many scientists and investors as possible aware of the power of PCT.”

Mr. Richard T. Schumacher, President and CEO of PBI, said: “On behalf of all PBI stakeholders, I extend my deep appreciation and best wishes to Wayne Fritzsche for his nearly eight years of tireless and dedicated service to our company, most of which were spent as chairman. His leadership has helped bring PBI to the point where, we believe, we are well positioned to successfully commercialize our powerful PCT Platform, as well as our other pressure-based products. It is fitting that as Wayne moves off the Board, he moves into a full-time, management position in PBI where he can significantly affect our future, commercial success.”

About Dr. Urdea

Dr. Urdea has devoted his 30-year career to human diagnostics in a variety of capacities. He has been involved in the discovery of new biomarkers, the development of new technologies for biomarker discovery, validation and commercialization, diagnostic test development, manufacturing and marketing, and the management of companies involved in these activities. Dr. Urdea founded and is a Managing Partner for Halteres Associates, a biotechnology consulting firm. He also founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of Tethys Bioscience, a proteomics-based diagnostics company involved in preventative personalized medicine. Tethys’ first product was the protein-based PreDx Diabetes Risk Score Test, which was introduced in 2008. Additionally, Dr. Urdea is a founder and the Chairman of Catalysis Foundation for Health, an organization addressing gaps in global healthcare caused by inefficiencies in disease diagnosis and monitoring. He serves as an expert consultant to the life sciences industry and is on the scientific advisory boards and boards of directors of a number of biotechnology, diagnostics, venture capital and philanthropic organizations.

Prior to his current business activities, Dr. Urdea founded the Nucleic Acid Diagnostics group at Chiron Corporation, and with colleagues, invented branched DNA molecules for amplification of signal in nucleic acid complexes. Application of this technology resulted in the first commercial products for quantification of human hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency viruses (HBV, HCV, and HIV, respectively). He then became business head of the Molecular Diagnostics group and Chief Scientific Officer at Bayer Diagnostics. He was also a member of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Diagnostic Forum.

Dr. Urdea is an author on nearly 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, nearly 300 abstracts and international scientific presentations, and more than 100 issued and pending patents. He received his BS in Biology and Chemistry from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and his Ph.D in Biochemistry from Washington State University in Pullman.

About Pressure BioSciences, Inc.

Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (PBIO) is focused on the development, marketing, and sale of proprietary laboratory instrumentation and associated consumables based on Pressure Cycling Technology. PCT is a patented, enabling technology platform with multiple applications in the estimated $6 billion life sciences sample preparation market. PBI currently focuses its efforts on the development and sale of PCT-enhanced sample preparation systems (instruments and consumables) for mass spectrometry, biomarker discovery, bio-therapeutics characterization, vaccine development, soil and plant biology, forensics, histology, and counter-bioterror applications.

Forward Looking Statements

Statements contained in this press release regarding PBI’s intentions, hopes, beliefs, expectations, or predictions of the future are “forward-looking” statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Such forward looking statements include statements regarding the value that Dr. Mickey Urdea is expected to contribute to the PBI Board of Directors and to the Company; that PCT has the potential to gain widespread adoption and become a vital sample preparation tool to research and clinical laboratories worldwide; the value that Mr. Wayne Fritzsche is expected to contribute to the commercial success of the PCT Platform and the Company’s other pressure-based products in his new management position with the Company; the size of the sample preparation market; and the applications for, and the competitive advantages of, the PCT Platform. These statements are based upon the Company’s current expectations, forecasts, and assumptions that are subject to risks, uncertainties, and other factors that could cause actual outcomes and results to differ materially from those indicated by these forward-looking statements. These risks, uncertainties, and other factors include, but are not limited to: possible difficulties or delays in the implementation of the Company’s strategies that may adversely affect the Company’s continued and expanded commercialization of its PCT-based product line; changes in customer’s needs and technological innovations; and the Company’s sales force and distribution network may not be successful in selling the Company’s PCT-based product line because scientists may not perceive the advantages of PCT over other sample preparation methods. Further, given the uncertainty in the capital markets and the current status of the Company’s product development and commercialization activities, there can be no assurance that the Company will secure the additional capital necessary to fund its operations beyond March 2013 on acceptable terms, if at all. Additional risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those indicated by these forward-looking statements are discussed under the heading “Risk Factors” in the Company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2011, and other reports filed by the Company from time to time with the SEC. The Company undertakes no obligation to update any of the information included in this release, except as otherwise required by law.

Speculators and investors see the potential of batteries and energy storage in the automotive sector and Balqon (BLQN) has had the efficient electric vehicle market covered since its inception. Like a handful of other relatively small-sized energy companies (Maxwell Technologies (MXWL) and Advanced Battery Technologies Inc.( ABAT) to name just two, BLQN understands that electric vehicles are only a part of the story and a fraction of the market.

On January 7th, Balqon Corporation (OTC.QB: BLQN), stalwart of the electric vehicle and lithium battery storage industries, renewed the faith of investors once again by receiving a handsome grant in the amount of $925,000 issued by the Los Angeles Department of Energy and administrated by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. The grant is a commission to develop three Model MX-30 electric trucks for drayage applications around the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and it comes on the heels of a string of other notable accomplishments made by the fledgling tech company throughout the past year.

Currently selling at .18 cents a share with a market cap of 7.38M and an average volume of 9,174, Balqon’s main interest of designing, developing, and distributing advanced cargo vehicles for industrial applications is compounded by its endeavors in building vehicles for public transportation and furnishing them with cutting edge battery production. Having recently been spotlighted in a Forbes online journal article on electric buses, Balqon’s ambitious variety of endeavors have positioned them with the potential to become one of the worldwide leaders in clean energy, and their generous new grant allows them to combine and develop many of their most recent technological advances in a unique way. In addition, Balqon is the only heavy duty truck manufacturer that has developed their own proprietary inverter and charger technologies for use in trucks and buses.

The Model MX30 commissioned for development by the grant is a Class 8 electric tractor introduced by Balqon in May of 2012. Used for short haul drayage and inner city applications, the MX30 is one of the most revolutionary electric vehicles on the market, reaching speeds of up to 70MPH and carrying loads of over 30 tons. It can travel up to 150 miles on a single three-hour charge.

But in addition to the opportunity to develop more electric vehicles, Balqon, a company which has recently made major strides into the industry of lithium battery storage, has expressed particular interest in this project because, as noted by CEO Balwinder Samra, it also allows Balqon to utilize in-house, proprietary energy storage technologies for the trucks.

“This project will help us develop and demonstrate short charge times by using lithium battery energy storage systems we have developed for renewable and energy storage industries,” said Samra.

Among those storage systems is Balqon’s relatively new series of lithium batteries called HIQAP™, introduced to the market on July 30th of last year. Intended to replace current lead acid battery technologies, the HIQAP™ model uses a low internal resistance which has been tested to be 15% more efficient during energy transfer than the current comparable lead and acid batteries. HIQAP™ is also being marketed as a green alternative to environmentally unfriendly lead batteries, and a modified version of the battery has even been put to use in electric powered airport baggage tractors.

Thanks to these advances in battery system productions, as well as a significant boost in their online presence, Balqon has reported that 10% of their 2012 second quarter revenue resulted from battery sales through their website, with numbers of online sales steadily increasing throughout the year. Given the company’s prior experience and accomplishments in the field of electric vehicles, this shift of focus into lithium battery energy storage has made Balqon a force to be reckoned with in the arena of clean energy tech companies.

With a quickly expanding arsenal of vehicles and battery products gaining traction around the globe, and its roots firmly planted with electric vehicles that operate in the Port of Los Angeles, Balqon Corporation may just be the next big thing in clean energy production. Investors interested in green energy and technology should put Balqon on the radar today.

Pressure BioSciences compares to Agilent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:A), Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:LIFE) and Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc. (NYSE:TMO) as they are all leading providers of important sample preparation or analytical mass spectrometry equipment, which is widely used in the analysis of small molecules including proteins, DNA and RNA.

Pressure BioSciences, Inc. (PBI) (OTCQB: PBIO), currently trading at $0.30 per share with a market cap of $3.51 million, began operations in mid-2007 out of Massachusetts. Since then, they have focused on the development, marketing and sales of proprietary lab instruments and related consumables based on their patented, powerful technology platform called Pressure Cycling Technology (PCT). With their Barocycler instruments, consumable products (processing reaction tubes and isolation kits that put molecules into workable states for a wide variety of lab applications), and their increasingly impressive sales record, PBIO broke through in 2012. Let us count the ways that this promising small cap ended the year in high style.

1) Sales and Revenue – At first glance, it may seem like the sales of Pressure BioSciences’ implicitly technical product line would be fated to plateau after fulfilling the demand of a few niche industries in the sample preparation market. However, PCT can prepare valuable samples for a whole spectrum of purposes and industries including FBI forensics, counter-bioterrorism, soil biology, plant biology, histology, vaccine development and bio-therapeutics characterization amongst others. All in all, these fields add up to an estimated $6 billion life sciences sample preparation market, which may help explain PBIO’s climb over the last year. The sales of PCT products and services increased 37 percent for the third quarter. Sales of PCT-based consumables were up 33 percent, and total revenue saw a jump of 40 percent. In addition, operating loss, cash burn and loss per common share all went down. Joseph L. Damasio, Vice President of Finance and Administration, said, “We worked hard to increase revenue while reducing our operating loss, with evident success for both. On the financing side, we received approximately $600,000 in short-term loans from five investors during the third quarter, including two members of the Board of Directors. We are very pleased with our financial performance for both the third quarter and the year-to-date period ending September 30, 2012.”

2) New Blood – Nothing keeps a company edgy and competitive like new blood and fresh ideas. As its momentum grew, PBIO recruited investment banking veteran Conrad Mir as their new Chief Financial Officer to raise funds in a quick and efficient way. Mr. Mir had this to say: “I look forward to being a part of the management team at Pressure BioSciences. It is my intent to help develop and implement a sustainable fiscal road map that can increase shareholder value by supporting continued growth, particularly in the marketing and sales area. I am grateful for the opportunity to help define the Company’s future.”

3) Strategic Partnership – On November 26, PBIO and Constant Systems Ltd. announced that the two companies have entered into a two-way, strategic marketing, selling and distribution agreement until December 31, 2013 at the very least. Under the terms of the Agreement, PBI has been awarded non-exclusive rights to market, sell, and distribute CS’s unique, high pressure cell disruption equipment and consumables in the United States, Canada, and Mexico while CS has been awarded the rights to market, sell, and distribute PCT based instruments and consumables in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Singapore. This expands PBIO’s coverage to 12 new countries, and neither company has qualms about sharing booths at trade shows or combining ads, webcasts and email campaigns.

4) Cole-Parmer Agreement – Most importantly, however, PBIO now has shared interests with Thermo Fisher (TMO) – a world leader in science service with revenues of approximately $12 billion. In early November, Thermo Fisher subsidiary, Cole-Parmer, announced an agreement to carry PBIO’s Shredder SG3 system for purchase on its Web site. For Cole-Parmer, the benefit is the instrument itself. The PBI Shredder SG3 System is ideal for the extraction of DNA, RNA, protein, mitochondria and small molecules while maximizing safety and sample integrity. The device offers a uniquely closed system for preparing samples compared to its competitors that are generally open systems. For PBIO, the benefits of this momentous agreement are more obvious: Cole-Parmer happens to be one of the world’s largest and most recognized distributors of lab equipment and supplies. This means increased visibility for PBIO’s superior product line as well as boosted sales as Cole-Parmer’s catalogs land in the hands of laboratory scientists all over the globe.

Other successes in 2012 included: strategic partnerships with LEAP Technologies, Sage-N Research, and Valco Instruments; expanded license agreement and collaboration with cancer management company Target Discovery; collaboration with world-famous forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee; and the presentation of important data generated using PBI’s instruments by scientists from a number of leading institutions, including UCLA, University of North Texas, the FDA, Janssen (a J&J company), Cernomics Solutions, and Florida International University.,

So, as PBIO takes the reins for 2013, investors should take notice. When it comes to PBIO’s potential, the sky is the limit. For more information, please visit www.pressurebiosciences.com

The diverse and pragmatic nation that is the United States, for better and worse, was founded by pioneers migrating westward towards a vast and promising land full of natural resources. That’s no secret. These brave and relentless Americans, going as far as California, staked their claims and, in many cases, proceeded to drill for gold, oil (black gold) and other precious substances hidden below the Earth’s surface. In some respects, we’ve come an awfully long way since then and seem almost out of touch with that back-breaking self-made lifestyle. Now, every middle-class and upper-middle-class citizen is attached at the hip to a personal computing device, smartphone and/or tablet complete with its own lithium battery. On the other hand, we’re still an oil-addicted society, gold prices are higher than ever and, ironically, companies still have to drill into the ground to find that lithium as the demand rises and the price has tripled in the last decade. If we embrace hybrid and electric vehicles over fossil fuel cars, that probing of the Earth’s crust is bound to continue as lithium demand is expected to double by 2020, and industry revenues reach into the billions.

For years, industry giants Talison Lithium (TSE: TLH), FMC Corporation (NYSE: FMC), Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM) and Chemetall controlled approximately 95 percent of the lithium market, which limited supply and maximized exclusivity. However, the recent purchase of Talison Lithium (TSE: TLH), the largest of all, for $732 million by Rockwood Holdings (Chemetall) has shaken things up. The transaction took the Canadian-listed company private at almost $6.60 per share – a 50 percent premium to its pre-offer trading price.

This purchase highlights and magnifies the value of lithium in today’s global economy, while potentially enhancing prospects for other lithium companies – especially junior exploration companies like AmeriLithium Corp. (OTCQB: AMEL). Meanwhile, large mining companies looking for lithium exposure are more likely to acquire late-stage exploration companies than pay a premium for one of the three producing giants.”

Therefore, AmeriLithium Corp., headquartered in Henderson, NV and trading at $0.0086 per share with a market cap of $1.48 million, stands to skyrocket as they continue to set up drilling operations for more than one of the world’s hottest subterranean treasures. In other words, not only is the company sitting on some of the most coveted lithium properties in the U.S., which has exponential potential if countries like China impose restrictions on exports like they do with rare earth metals, but now, AMEL is looking to start mining for gold in the ripe Katanning region of Western Australia .

Amerilithium has acquired more than 700,000 acres of exploration land including three in Australia, one in Alberta, Canada and four projects based in Nevada – near the only lithium producing plant on American soil. These holdings form one of the largest portfolios in North America, and the future is bright for AMEL. In July 2012, the company finished a geophysical study of their Australian holdings and targeted their drilling sites. In late August, the company announced the receipt of permits from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to drill up to ten holes per property on both its Jackson Wash and Clayton Deep lithium projects in Nevada. Let the drilling begin.

In the short term, as gold prices peak, perhaps the search in Katanning is more immediately enticing than the seemingly long-term payoff of lithium mining. AMEL is joining the Australian gold rush at a very profitable juncture. Companies like Newmont Boddington Gold (NYSE: NEM) and Ausgold Limited (ASX: AUC.AX) have proven reserves of 20 million and 5 million ounces in Katanning respectively.

Better still, AMEL is currently in the final stages of securing the services of a new geologist and drill team. The company is also negotiating land access deals with land owners at a low price for each hole that’s drilled. The gold potential of the Katanning project tenements were evaluated by grid soils, regional tracking and trail soil sampling, and harvesting should conclude in late January of 2013 to allowing for initiation of the drill program.

All three of AMEL’s tenements are situated within the Katanning Greenstone Belt region – a veritable hotbed of gold anomalies. Further exploration via air-core drilling by Ausgold Limited (ASX: AUC) and others, including Amerilithium’s Australian holding company (South West Minerals), will likely extend this belt’s dimensions in all directions. In other words, AMEL has already staked its claim, so what’s next? Well, drill…baby…drill.

While it is rare for the always-reliable and steady life sciences industry to make waves in the press, one company with a long-lasting reputation of nearly a decade has recently forged something of a comeback, receiving headlines the likes of which many younger companies would be envious. Pressure BioSciences, Inc, (PBIO) currently trading at .22 cents with an average volume of 19,254, has been reporting record numbers throughout the year. PBIO is a life sciences company which focuses on the development and sale of pressure-based technologies used for analyzing cells and molecules in the fields of forensics, bio-marker discovery, vaccine development, and even counter-bioterror applications.

As demand for these technologies has ballooned over the past several years, Pressure BioSciences has reaped the benefits. In 2012, total sales for Quarter Three reached a 40% increase over the prior year period, and sales of their proprietary PCT (“Pressure Cycling Technology”) products and services climbed to a 37% increase. Grant revenue also increased significantly over that same period, while operating losses decreased.

If that isn’t a financially sound business model, we don’t know what is. And when it comes to financial investments, as anyone skeptical of Pressure BioSciences’ current surge of growth can not only look at the numbers, but also a handful of the Company’s recent accomplishments, to decide whether PBIO is a solid investment.

On November 26th, Pressure BioSciences greatly expanded its product line by entering into a two-way marketing, selling, and distribution agreement with Constant Systems, to offer that company’s “cell disruption equipment and consumables” to consumers all over North America. On the flip side, Constant Systems will offer PBIO’s PCT technologies in countries throughout Europe – a move that exponentially increases Pressure BioSciences’ exposure and potential revenue, beginning immediately in Q1 2013.

Keen to express his enthusiasm for the deal, Pressure BioSciences, Inc. President and CEO Richard T. Schumacher was quoted as saying: “the two product lines complement each other exceedingly well. While both the CS and PBI technologies are based on high pressure, each product line has fundamental scientific capabilities that the other does not have. PBI’s PCT Platform uses certain patented pressure mechanisms to achieve small-scale, molecular level effects. CS’s technology uses different, proprietary pressure mechanisms for larger-scale, non-molecular level processing.”

This is great news not only for both of these companies, but also for PBIO’s diverse multitude of research-based consumers, which includes Harvard University, the FBI, and agricultural giant Monsanto, as the ability to access these complementary technologies from Pressure BioSciences, without having to negotiate with a third party or import technologies from overseas, will no doubt help make consumer operations run more economically and efficiently.

Pressure BioSciences is undoubtedly a seasoned company with a new agenda. In addition to their other recent accomplishments, including their distribution deal with Thermos Fisher’s subsidiary Cole Parmer (announced last month), their deal with Constant Systems alone guarantees them a wealth of new opportunities over the course of the next year, beginning immediately. Investors looking for an undervalued stock with the potential for serious short-term gains and long-term stability need look no further than PBIO.

Like a handful of other relatively small-sized energy companies like Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE), Ultralife Corp (NASDAQ: ULBI) and Balqon Corporation (OTCBB: BLQN) BLQN understands that electric vehicles are only a part of the story and a fraction of the market.

For better and/or worse, technology, in almost all sectors, continues to excel at a faster rate than ever before…exponentially even. Thus, the last decade has seen a multitude of new markets arise – particularly with technologies that function synergistically with our increasingly “green” society. One of the most prominent of these fast-growing markets is that of lithium battery energy storage. The global lithium battery market is expected to grow at a steady rate of almost 14 percent every year through 2015 as the cost of manufacturing plummets, and everything from laptop computers to tablets and our hybrid and electric vehicles employ them. As the demand for stable electric grids becomes a major focus for most economies, lithium battery energy storage will also become a key component in efficiently solving the energy storage equation.

Naturally, the ones with knowledge and expertise in the electric vehicle market have a head start. Companies such as Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE), Ultralife Corp (NASDAQ: ULBI) and Balqon Corporation (OTCBB: BLQN) are all racing to corner this emerging energy market. But, Balqon may have the edge as the dark horse here. Not only has this small cap out of Los Angeles County, CA become a leading developer and manufacturer of proprietary electric drive systems for zero-emissions tractors, trucks and buses since its inception in 2005, but the company has also firmly embraced the essential shift into lithium-ion battery storage. In other words, BLQN has made its name by cleanly hauling heavy freight at marine terminals, warehouses and inner cities, but now it’s hunkering down for what some call “The Green Revolution.”

Balqon Corporation, now headquartered in Harbor City, CA, currently trades at $0.22 per share with a market cap of $9.2 million. The company possesses a executive team and a company CEO with more than 20 years of executive experience in the field of electric vehicles and chemistry chops to boot in Balwinder Samra. In addition to striking a deal with the Port of Los Angeles to develop the world’s first zero-emission electric tractors to move 30 ton containers at marine terminals and pioneering Lithium Iron Phosphate technology, BLQN introduced charging systems that vary in capacity from 8 kilo watt to 160 kilo watt in power and 200 volts to 700 volts in charge voltage.

More recently, Balqon bestowed renewable energy upon the Bourns College of Engineering building at the University of California, Riverside Campus with its Megawatt Hour storage system on top of being awarded a grant to produce three on-road Class 8 Electric trucks for the Department of Energy. In addition, the company’s HIQAP series – a new high capacity lithium battery with more than 20 percent more efficiency than the previous model – is miles ahead of the current and standard technology of lead acid batteries.

The biggest indicator of vast diversification, however, came a month ago when BLQN announced the release of its HIQAP-GS series. The expansion pack was intended for one purpose: to replace the lead acid battery that powers most airport baggage tractors. In late September, the HIQAP-GS™ battery packs wowed audiences while on display at the International Airport Exposition in Las Vegas. CEO Balwinder Samra had this to say:

“Ability to fast charge HIQAP-GS™ batteries in less than one hour will allow customers to use existing electric tractors for two shift operations. Features such as zero maintenance, and double the life than a lead acid battery, can be the catalyst that accelerates transition of airports towards zero emission technologies.”

This past August, the stock broke out more than 20 percent higher during early trading and moved as high as 26 percent during mid-day on higher-than-average volume of 81,973 shares. If nothing else, this is one of many bits of proof for the growing momentum of Balqon Corporation as well as the value of lithium-ion batteries in utility-scale energy storage markets. With an array of proprietary lithium batteries, including the company’s new 12, 24, and 48 volt HIQAP configurations, BLQN is making lead acid batteries a thing of the past, and clean efficiency a thing of the future. The obvious potential spans more than one renewable energy industry and therefore many markets as well. To put it bluntly, investors that bank on Balqon will help solidify two revolutions: The technological and the ecological.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Amarantus Bioscience, Inc. (AMBS), a biotechnology company developing new treatments and diagnostics for Parkinson’s disease and Traumatic Brain Injury centered on its proprietary anti-apoptosis therapeutic protein MANF, today announced that it has appointed former Super Bowl Champion Toi Cook to its Board of Advisors. Mr. Cook will work with Company management to engage the National Football League (NFL), NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and individual retired players to raise awareness and funding for Amarantus’ Coalition for Concussion Treatment (#C4CT) campaign, including the Company’s MANF collaboration with Banyan Biomarkers that yielded positive data in Q2/2012.

“It’s time to change the conversation about concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury in the NFL,” said Toi Cook, Amarantus’ newly appointed advisor. “We have been so focused on who is to blame for the rash of devastating results of brain injuries suffered while playing, that we have lost focus on the actual players who need help. Amarantus is working on breakthrough science that could ultimately treat concussions, brain injuries and their long-term side effects. This is the type of program that needs to be highlighted to the powers that be in the NFL and the NFLPA and we, as former players, need to be pushing the NFL and NFLPA to focus on providing support for research teams that are seeking to develop new treatments such as MANF that have the potential to fundamentally treat the devastating results of the brain injuries.”

Mr. Cook had an 11 year career in the NFL, playing for the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers. Mr. Cook had an interception as a defensive back in the 1994 Super Bowl championship for the San Francisco 49ers. Since retiring from the NFL, Mr. Cook has worked primarily in Sports and Entertainment. He was Executive Vice President in the Sports Division at the Gersh Agency in Los Angeles from 2004-2006. He is the principle at Toi Cook Management Group, LLC (TCMG), which has consulted for Broadband Sports, A2A Holdings and Dreier Sports. He is currently a plaintiff in a lawsuit of former NFL players against the NFL in relationship to concussions sustained while playing. He served as the Player Representative for the NFLPA for eight years when he was a player in the NFL. He was a football and baseball star at Stanford University, where he graduated in Communications after winning the College World Series in 1987.

“Toi will be a great addition to our Board of Advisors,” said Gerald E. Commissiong, President & CEO of Amarantus. “He has deep-rooted connections into the NFL and the NFLPA at the highest levels, and understands the need to bring the various communities involved in Traumatic Brain Injury together in order to effect meaningful change in the conversation related to TBIs from a discourse about blame, to a discourse about finding solutions through medical science. We will work together to bring the #C4CT program to the forefront of this discussion. There are treatments in development that need further support to ensure these programs have the necessary resources to move forward. We need leadership from groups like the NFL and NFLPA if we are to effect meaningful change in the area of TBI by bringing developers and patients together.”

In recent years, the link between multiple concussions and long-term disability or brain disease has received significant scientific support. Recent studies have made clear scientific links between football-style hits and long-term brain diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Increasing evidence supports the notion that mis-folded proteins play a critical role in the long-term side effects of concussions. Amarantus believes that MANF, which is selectively upregulated by glial cells in response to ischemia-induced neural injury and protects brain cells from chemically induced brain injury, will play a role in protecting brain cells from injury within the context of Traumatic Brain Injury.

About Amarantus Bioscience, Inc.

Company Findings Suggest That Advanced Optical Coatings Comprised of Nanostructured Transparent Conductive Oxide Materials Can Enhance Photovoltaic Device Performance

ALBANY, NY–(Marketwire – Nov 28, 2012) – Magnolia Solar Corporation ( OTCBB : MGLT ) (“Magnolia Solar”), developer of revolutionary thin-film solar cell technologies employing nanostructured materials and designs, announced that Dr. Roger E. Welser, the Chief Technology Officer of its wholly owned subsidiary, Magnolia Solar, Inc., presented a paper at the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, MA titled “Nanostructured Transparent Conductive Oxides for Photovoltaic Applications,” as part of a special session on Photovoltaic Technologies. In addition, Dr. Welser will also be a Session Chair for the Session titled “New Concepts, Materials and Technologies for Future Photovoltaics” to be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2012.

Dr. Welser’s presentation discussed the use of advanced optical coatings of nanostructured transparent conductive oxide materials that can enhance photovoltaic device performance by minimizing reflection losses and increasing the optical path length within thin-film solar cells. He also discussed the use of nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) materials in antireflection structures with a step-graded refractive index design. Such conductive, high-performance optical structures on the front and back surfaces of a thin-film solar cell can potentially increase both the current and voltage output by scattering unabsorbed and emitted photons back into the active region of the device.

Photovoltaic devices can provide a mobile source of electrical power for a variety of defense and commercial applications in both space and terrestrial environments. Many of these mobile power applications can directly benefit from enhancements in the efficiency of the photovoltaic devices. Dr. Ashok K. Sood, President and CEO of Magnolia Solar Corporation, stated, “Dr. Welser’s presentation is a part of the steps we are working on to improve the performance of flexible, thin-film solar cells by employing novel, nanostructured materials, filing patents to protect our intellectual property, and continuing to make progress in further improving our optical coating technologies. These coatings, in combination with other innovative device designs, have the potential to enable flexible photovoltaic devices to reach new levels of performance for power output efficiency and it is important that we share these findings with the industry.”

The Materials Research Society (MRS) is an organization of materials researchers from academia, industry, and government that promotes communication for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research to improve the quality of life. Founded in 1973, MRS consists of over 16,000 members from the United States — as well as nearly 70 other countries.

About Magnolia Solar Corporation

Based in Woburn, MA and Albany, NY, Magnolia Solar was founded in 2008 to develop and commercialize revolutionary new thin-film solar cell technologies that employ nanostructured materials and designs. Both higher current and higher voltage outputs are expected from thin-film solar cells that combine Magnolia’s exclusive material structures with advanced optical coatings. Magnolia’s patent-pending technology has the ability to capture a larger part of the solar spectrum to produce high efficiency solar cells, and incorporates a unique nanostructure-based antireflection coating technology to further increase solar cell efficiency, thereby reducing the cost per watt. The company is targeting a variety of civilian and defense applications for its photovoltaic solar cells. Magnolia’s solar cell technology can be used to generate power for existing electrical grids, and is particularly well-suited for distributed and portable power generation applications.
